I'll start out with the good news. I hit a personal record for women approached (5) and numbers (2).
The line for the day: "I like your style"
Granted, I only used this a few times, so some of these are "extra-curricular" approaches, but sometimes you have to adapt to the situation.
I started out by going over to Greenway Station. I wanted to get a few more canvasses to work on, because I've started to enjoy this outlet. I got some smaller ones to work with.
I went to World Market first, and as I walked in, there was this really sweet woman at the front giving out baskets. I walked around for a bit, and saw her in the back putting some merchandise on shelves. I decided to go talk to her. I went up to her and said: "I'm sorry for interrupting you, but I just have to ask, are you really that sweet, or is it just part of the job?" We joked around for a bit about that, then I asked her if she was in school. She's studying human and family development. We talked for a little about that and I then I said that I had to go, but I told her to put her number in my phone so that we could talk later. She put her number in there and I talked to her for another minute or two, then said goodbye.
I went over to Marshalls, just to take a look around. I found a cool shirt that said Miami South Beach on it, so being a native Miamian, I had to buy it. While in line, I noticed that the woman in front of me was buying running shorts, so I had to ask if she was a runner. She said that she was a beginning runner, trying to get into it. Then, they called her up to the register. Another register opened up right after, and I was able to pay for my stuff before she finished, so I went over and continued the conversation. I then told her about the running group and gave her my card and told her about the benefits of running with a group. Granted, this isn't a traditional approach as part of my challenge, but again, extra-curriculars.
Later in the afternoon, I went over to Hilldale. While in Target, I saw this woman that I had to approach. She looked very Miami, so I finally had a chance to use my "I like your style" line. I asked her if she was from the Caribbean, but it turns out she's from Madison. I complimented her on being outside the midwestern box. She told me that for fun she just walks around Target. I was like "are you serious, or just joking with me?" Apparently, she actually does walk around Target for fun. I told her that I make it a point to meet someone if I'm walking around in Target, because you have to be bold and take risks. We talked about that for a bit, then I told her that I liked talking to her and wanted to talk to her again. I told her to put her number in my phone. She said she was in a serious relationship. I told her it's cool, I just like making new friends. I could tell she was still on the fence, so I tried breaking it down logically. That was my fatal mistake. Logic failed me.
While walking back to my car, I saw a woman sitting on a bench waiting for the bus. I stopped and talked to her for a bit. She is a nursing student, so I related that to my time as a teacher. We talked for a bit more, but then her bus came. I tried to get her number, but she was hesitant, probably because I didn't really have time to talk and get her comfortable with that Stupid bus.
On the way home, I stopped off at HyVee to get some food for the week. While there I saw a woman that had a sort of classy look, but yet casual. I approached her and told her that I like her style, that it's sort of classy yet casual. We joked for a bit about cookies and how she likes to eat them (we were on the cookie aisle.) I asked her for her number and she said "I'm not sure how my boyfriend would like that." I told her it's cool, I just like making new friends, plus she probably has some single friends that would like to meet an interesting guy. She gave me her number.
That makes it 10 total approaches over 4 days. I've gotten 4 numbers already, which is just one shy of my entire total from last month. I think the kid is getting better at this. All-in-all, not a bad start to August. Fortune favors the bold!
Wow - you're on a roll! Congrats! Won't this challenge inevitably bankrupt you? I'm like the girl from target - I love that store. If I went there as much as you I would own the whole store in a week!
ReplyDeleteNo, because sometimes I don't buy anything, and when I do, it's either something I need, or something small, like around $3.
DeleteIt's a lot of fun, though. You should consider trying to meet people, while you're there. I'd be interested to see how a woman fares, compared to a man.
